The name derives from a family who must have inhabited the region in the 15th century although no direct link exists between a descendent of that clan and the estate. It was the Roborel family who certainly did expand the property in the 18th century although the last member of the dynasty, Jean-Baptiste Roborel was forced to relinquish his proprietorship following an unrecorded catastrophe that compelled him to uproot most of the vineyard. He died in 1800 and Château Climens was sold to Jean Binaud, the estate comprising of approximately 27 hectare of vines. In 1855 it was classed as a Premier Cru alongside Château Coutet and in the second edition of Cocks, he places it below Coutet as one of two Premier Crus. But Climens was devastated by the phylloxera epidemic in 1885 and consequently the owner decided to sell it to Henri Gounouilhou, the unpronounceable director of one France's most famous newspapers: Sud-Ouest whose wife owned Château Doisy-Dubroca.
